Is Taking Care of Teak Furniture Difficult - Read on to Find Out

Staining and Preservation

You really don't need to defend your teak furniture. Teakwood is genuinely exclusive in the fact that if you leave it in its inherent state, it genuinely doesn't require any preservation. If you leave your teak furnishings outdoors 24 hours a day seven days a week 365 days a year and not have to worry about it, this is even if the weather conditions in your area are extreme. It is because of this that many people deem teak wood as the supreme standard for any type of outdoor garden furniture. This is why people love teak furnishings so much.

It is true that after being exposed to the sun for a prolonged period of time that teak wood will start to turn a silvery gray color, but this is a organic process and doesn't harm the structural integrity of the wood at all.

A lot of people like to use a teak sealant on their wood in order to help it to maintain its organic honey color. It is often used to help to give the teak wood a darker color as well. Applying a teak sealant to your furniture will do more than just help to darken it up, it will also provide a UV protection and an anti-fungicide which will keep mold from developing. After that teak furniture has been cleaned, these teak sealants can be placed on any piece of furnishings whether it be new or old. This isn't the same thing as varnishing your furniture. All it does is act as a preservative for the wood while still allowing it to breathe and release its inborn oils. It will not bubble or peel up like lacquer will. These items both help to protect and stain your wood the color that you like. By standing your teak a darker color, you will be providing it with more UV protection, and in the end you are going to have to stain it less. If by chance you have inherited a piece of teak furnishings from someone that has lacquer on it, you will need to remove all of the old lacquer by sanding, and then you have the choice of either staining it the color you like or leaving it inherent.

It is really a pretty straightforward process to apply preservative to your teak furnishings. Make sure that you apply the preservative to the furniture during the summer time months when it has been sitting in the sun for a lengthy time and all of the grains are opened up. To apply it, all you have to do is spray it on and then rub it with a rag. Try to make sure that you apply two coats in this fashion on all surfaces of the wood top, bottom, sides and between any slats. If you are applying the stain on any surface that you care about, then you need to make sure that you put something under your wood as you don't want to cause stain damage to anything you care about. You will need to apply a coat to your furniture each year, but after the first coat you will only need to apply it to surfaces that received the sun.

After you have sealed your teak furnishings, there is very little else that needs to be done to protect the finish. You could wash the furniture every once in a while a soap and water which will help to remove any normal soiling. It is important that you be careful and try not to spill things like coffee, wine or other staining foods, as these items can and will penetrate the sealant and leave a stain. If you want to avoid this, you can put a teak clear coat on the surfaces that are in danger, like tabletops as this will improve resistance to stains.

Because of the biological oils that are contained in teak wood, and migrate out of the wood to the surface, in essence teak wood protects itself and makes itself pretty much impervious to water. These organic oils leach out of the wood, and because of this it isn't a good idea to put glaze or water sealers on any teak product. By putting polyurethane or lacquer products on it you can be assured that they will peel off and chip. The only way to remove these mistakes is by standing, which can be a real nightmare and is best avoided.

It isn't a good idea to put oil on your teak furniture either, as it has plenty of its own, and it will just end up creating a mold problem on your piece of furniture. This again causes more work for you as you will need to wash the furniture with bleach and soap and then sand the surface.

Purchasing a piece of teak wood furniture is a worthwhile investment if you enjoy spending time outdoors. Teak furniture helps to accentuate any yard and make it look classy and nice. In order to defend your investment in is vital to know how to take care of it.
